Cal State Bakersfield more than doubled its offensive output from its game on Sunday, but still lost to UC Riverside on the road on Wednesday afternoon. The Roadrunners (3-5) scored 65 points but fell 68-65 to the Highlanders (3-7).

"We were battling," CSUB head coach Greg McCall said to "We made some crucial mistakes, defensively, at the end. That kind of hurt us as we were right on the doorstep of taking the lead or tying the game. We came out a little softer, but we started playing our style of basketball. We've got some things we need to work on, but we also need to keep up the same defensive effort."

Facing an eight-point deficit with a minute left, CSUB cashed in on an Aja Williams layup. Point guard Alexxus Gilbert blocked a shot on the defensive end. Junior forward Jerice Fears followed with a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left to cut the Riverside lead to just three points.

But the Roadrunners never got another shot off. CSUB didn’t foul and Williams blocked a UC Riverside shot attempt with three seconds left.

The Highlanders took advantage of CSUB down low, scoring 40 points in the paint to CSUB’s 16. Three of Riverside’s starting guards — Michelle Curry, Lauren Holt and Clemence Lefebvre — combined for 47 points.

CSUB’s Gilbert scored a season-high 12 points with two 3s. Jazmine Johnson played all but five minutes in the game and scored a team-high 15 points with seven rebounds.
