The first day of the 2018 season didn’t go as planned for Cal State Bakersfield’s softball team. The Roadrunners (0-2) dropped the first game to Campbell, 5-3, at the University of San Diego Tournament and fell, 7-5, to the tournament hosts later in the day.
Last season’s top pitcher for CSUB, Summer Evans, started both games. The senior gave up four runs — three earned — on five hits, two walks, three wild pitches and two hit batters against Campbell. She surrendered four runs on six hits in three innings against San Diego.
Third baseman Paige Johnson, who transferred from Antelope Valley College, tallied two of CSUB’s just seven hits across the two games and three of its five runs batted in. The Roadrunners were outhit 20-7 on the day.
