UC Santa Barbara center fielder Tommy Jew hit a sacrifice fly to right with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning to take down Cal State Bakersfield (18-33), 6-5, in Santa Barbara on Tuesday.
The Roadrunners were able to counter each score by the Gauchos (24-24-1) through the first nine innings thanks in part to home runs from Luis Martinez and Ryan Koch in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively. Martinez’s was a two-run homer and his team-high sixth home run of the year.
But in the 10th, CSUB reliever Steven Gee took over and hit the only batter he faced. Michael Bovee Jr. replaced Gee. Bovee Jr. struck out the first batter he saw but gave up a single up the middle and a single to short to load the bases. Then Jew ended the game with the sacrifice fly.
CSUB will finish up the regular season with a home series against Chicago State starting Thursday. The Roadrunners are in sixth place in the Western Athletic Conference and hold the last spot eligible for the WAC Tournament.
