Bakersfield Condors forward Mitch Callahan has been suspended 20 games for violating terms of the American Hockey League/Professional Hockey Players Association Performance Enhancing Substances Program, the league announced Tuesday.

Callahan, 26, was signed by the Oilers last summer to a two-year contract and has played the entire season with the Condors.

“The Edmonton Oilers organization supports the AHL/PHPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program and respects the decision to suspend Mitch Callahan," said Oilers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Peter Chiarelli in a statement.

“We are confident that the violation was a simple oversight by Mitch and was not done to gain a competitive advantage,” Chiarelli added. “This suspension highlights the responsibility of the player to be diligent in ensuring that all substances they consume are pre-approved by the Banned Substance Control Group. We fully support Mitch and look forward to him returning to game play following the suspension.”

The Condors had no comment.

A veteran, Callahan has struggled to produce offensively this season with just nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 46 games. He had 43 points for the Grand Rapids Griffins in 66 games — a career high — last season and also played in four games for the Detroit Red Wings.

The Condors, who have won two straight, play in San Diego on Wednesday night with road games in Tucson on Saturday and Monday.

Callahan, who served as an assistant captain for the Condors, is eligible to return to action on April 11, the first of the final three regular-season games for the Condors.
