The Cal State University Roadrunners men’s basketball team had one final tune-up prior to their 2017-18 season opener on Saturday night.
They hope it's a sign of things to come.
CSUB beat Biola 86-62 in their final preseason scrimmage before the real games begin. The Roadrunners open the 2017-18 season on Friday at home against Whittier College. Game time is 7 p.m. at Icardo Center.
Saturday’s scrimmage saw two newcomers get in on the act. True freshman Jarkel Joiner (Oxford High School, Miss.) and junior college transfer Rickey Holden (Jones County CC, Miss.) each led the team with 25 minutes apiece.
Holden scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor. He also added five assists to his stat line.
Joyner scored 13 points of his own on 4-of-15 shooting. He knocked down three 3-pointers as well and grabbed four rebounds.
Damiyne Durham showed his scoring prowess, pumping in a team-high 18 points in just 16 minutes of action.
Shon Briggs and Justin Davis each grabbed five rebounds for the Roadrunners, who never trailed in the contest and led by as much as 25.
Cal State Bakersfield also had its annual Blue-Gold scrimmage this preseason and played another scrimmage last Monday at Long Beach State. Proceeds from that scrimmage went toward relief efforts for the Sonoma County fires that took place in October.
CSUB is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance two years ago and reached the NIT Final Four last season.
