Felix Adamo / The Californian

Cal State Bakersfield Bakersfield sophomore — and Garces High School graduate — Julianne Finch was named Western Athletic Conference Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week for March 5-11.

Finch shared the award with Chicago State’s Asia Johnson.

Finch, a sophomore from Bakersfield, Calif., placed second overall in the pole vault, but first amongst collegiate student-athletes, at the Oxy Distance Carnival in Los Angeles. She posted a mark of 11-7.75 to rank 17th in the nation.

A 2016 graduate of Garces, Finch holds GHS records in the 100-meter hurdles (15.75) and pole vault (12-01.00). She was named Team MVP and First Team All-SWYL from 2013-15, First Team All-Area in 2014, and Second Team All-Area in 2013 and 2015.

CSUB’s Falon Wilson — who graduated from Stockdale — was also a nominee for the award after finishing second in both the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles. She placed eighth in the nation with a time of 14.36 in the hurdles, and 17th with a time of 12.05 in the dash.
