The abrupt end to the football season for local teams a week before the Central Section championships lends itself to focus on the start of winter sports in Kern County, which begins in earnest on Tuesday with basketball games and soccer matches galore.

It also means the first BVarsity Central Section Top 10 rankings for boys and girls basketball.

Clovis West, which made section history last season with a CIF State Open Division girls basketball championship, will likely come back down to earth, sort of.

The Golden Eagles begin this season as the preseason No. 1 and likely will remain that way throughout based on prior performances with five consecutive Division I section titles and a 58-game win streak in section dating back to Dec. 7, 2013.

Yes, Clovis West lost a ton to graduation but bring back standouts like Bre’yanna Sanders and Madison Campbell.

No. 2 Independence, winners of three consecutive D-II titles, will now get a crack at Clovis West as the Falcons move up to D-I.

On the boys side, Fresno-San Joaquin Memorial gets the initial No. 1 spot based on statewide consensus that the young and talented Panthers leapfrogged No. 2 Fresno-Central for section supremacy.

Led by nationally recruited sophomore guard Jalen Green, Lunden Taylor and senior transfer Dameane Douglas from Hanford West, Memorial is loaded.

Bakersfield, which lost to Central in the D-I finals last March, comes in at No. 3. The Drillers will be led by Cal State Bakersfield-commit Ronnie Stapp and juniors R.J. Banks and Tahj Wright. Just behind the Drillers is fellow Southwest Yosemite League member Liberty. The Patriots bring back one of the top guard duos in the section with Isaiah Hill and Kadar Waller and add a big post threat with Javier Gallardo, a transfer from Chavez.
