Cruised his way to a second straight state championship, despite a late start because of football and a weight class that included several returning state medalists. Demison, who has signed with Arizona State, wrestled only two matches closer than five points: His first of the season and the state final, a 5-2 victory against Jack Ramalia of Granite Bay.
Cole Reyes, Frontier
Sophomore • 106 pounds • 47-6
Took a giant leap forward after a strong freshman season, winning the Central Section Masters title and finishing fourth at the state tournament for his first medal. Also was runner-up at the Doc Buchanan Invitational.
Elijah Navarro, Bakersfield
Senior • 113 pounds • 21-16
Capped his career with a Southwest Yosemite League championship and a ninth-place finish in the Central Section to qualify for the CIF State Championships for the first time.
Ryan Morphis, Frontier
Sophomore • 120 pounds • 38-16
After a strong third-place finish in the Central Section, qualified for state for the second straight year, going 2-2. The nephew of Frontier coach Kirk Moore, Morphis also won the El Dorado Invitational.
Izzak Olejnik, Bakersfield
Junior • 126 pounds • 27-13
Turned in a strong regular season, with a runner-up finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions, an SWYL championship and a third-place finish at perhaps the Central Section’s toughest weight. Olejnik qualified for state for the third consecutive year.
Elijah Ozuna, Frontier
Senior • 132 pounds • 42-7
Won titles at the El Dorado Invitational and the Temecula Valley Battle for the Belt, then beat state No. 1 Chris Deloza of Clovis North (for the fourth time in five tries) en route to a state finals appearance. His silver medal was his first hardware at state.
J.J. Figueroa, Bakersfield
Senior • 138 pounds • 41-11
Bounced back from an elbow injury that cost him his junior-year postseason to earn sixth place and his second medal at state. Figueroa was third at the Doc B, the SWYL champion and third in the Central Section.
Jonathan Garcia, Frontier
Senior • 152 pounds • 36-11
Earned a state medal in his third trip to the state championships, finishing seventh. Garcia also won the Yosemite Divisional and the Madera South Invitational and finished second in the Central Section.
Ricky Gonzalez, Bakersfield
Senior • 160 pounds • 42-13
Another senior who capped his career with a third trip to state and his first state medal. Gonzalez took sixth in state after winning the Rumble for the Rig and SWYL title and finishing third in the Central Section.
Jeremy Maas, Liberty
Senior • 170 pounds • 39-7
Spent most of the year in the state top 10 despite a concussion that cost him nearly a month of action in the middle of the season. Maas was the SWYL champion, runner-up at the Yosemite Divisional and third in the Central Section.
Sam Loera, Bakersfield
Senior • 182 pounds • 45-11
Improved on last year’s seventh-place medal at state with a fourth-place finish as a senior. Loera won the SWYL and was the section’s runner-up; nearly half of his losses came to the wrestlers who battled for the state title in his weight class.
Willem DeBoer, Frontier
Senior • 182 pounds • 30-10
Finished his career with a flourish, not only qualifying for state for the first time but earning an eighth-place state medal. DeBoer also was the Central Valley Invitational champion and finished fifth in the section.
Adrian Godinez, Foothill
Senior • 195 pounds • 34-8
Had just two losses in the regular season and then, despite an ankle injury that had him wrestling in pain, finished eighth at state to earn his second straight medal. Godinez also won the CIT Morro Bay and the SEYL.
Ricardo Garcia, Highland
Senior • 220 pounds • 32-13
Started wrestling as an inexperienced freshman and worked his way into the state championships as a senior, reversing a loss in the SEYL finals to reach the section Masters, where he finished 10th.
Brett Schuler, Bakersfield Christian
Senior • Heavyweight • 26-7
Repeated as a state qualifier after becoming the first for BCHS a year ago. Schuler notched championships at the Kern County Invitational, the SSL and the Sierra-Sequoia Divisional.
