Bakersfield College started the 2018 season with one win and one loss on Friday. The Renegades fell, 2-1, to Santiago Canyon in the true season-opening game and beat San Diego Mesa, 9-0, later in the day in just five innings.
“They turned it on in that second game,” BC head coach Casey Goodman said. “That was a fun game to watch.”
BC freshman pitcher Kylee Fahy started against San Diego Mesa and threw six innings, striking out four batters. She only gave up two runs, both coming in the third inning, but BC scored just one. Renegade Monica Alvarez scored on a wild pitch.
Pitcher Mckenna Valencia was the star in the second game. She pitched five scoreless innings and drove in five runs at the plate. She hit a triple that ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning because of the college mercy rule.
BC outhit San Diego Mesa, 13-2. The Roadrunners had six players with two hits.
