Upon retiring at the end of the year, I've been able to come up with some of my most interesting or favorite photos to share with you.

One of my most memorable photos is a river rescue in the Kern River Canyon of a young inner-tuber in the late 1980s. He got his leg caught between two rocks for several hours, but fortunately Search and Rescue and Caltrans workers, including a good friend, Dwight Pascoe (foreground), were able to hold onto him and eventually rescue him from the fast-moving water.

We interviewed the rescued victim 10 years later; he was working as a deputy sheriff in Southern California and doing well.

Other special photos are of various animals, including a bobcat, egret and horses.

I still appreciate the photo of a girl dressed up at the Kern County Fair in 2001 during a dress-alike contest while holding her chicken, Fred, and yawning at the same time.

The egret reflected in Mirror Lake in Hart Park, with the wings almost touching the water, is one of my favorite bird photos.

I also love the photo of Onyx Ranch cowboss Juan Martinez in 2002 searching for stray cattle in the South Fork area of the Kern River Valley and cowboy Eric Hafenfeld crossing the creek on his horse Buzz in 2000.

I'm thankful to have been able to meet so many awesome people and photograph them over the past 33 years. It's been a great learning experience. Thanks to all who have supported and encouraged me and subscribed to The Californian over the years.

Wishing you all the best.

Sincerely,

Casey Christie
