Base reduction facts

MORE FACTS:

* At stake in California are 274,000 military and civilian defense jobs and payrolls of $8.8 billion.

* Next year will be the fifth Base Realignment and Closure round. The first round was in 1988.

* Congress authorized the process to cut spending on unneeded World War II-era military bases.

* The BRAC 2005 process will be different than in the four earlier rounds. Instead of relying on the individual services to make their own decisions, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and his staff will be deeply involved.

* Since the first round in 1988, the services have shuttered or realigned 157 facilities.

* California has been hardest hit, with 30 bases affected. No other state has had more than 10.
