Reader: Regarding the headline on Wednesday's letter from former council member [Conni] Brunni... Bad job. The editor who did that ["Salvaggio is a tool who gets his facts wrong"] should be suspended... or smacked with a tool.

Reader: I just have one question. What is The Californian's mission statement?
Thank you.

Arthur: Last week we answered a number of questions from a curious reader who asked to go unnamed. Here are a couple we didn't have room for:
Question: What time is the paper "put to bed?" I ask this because I find often old news (new items that have been on nightly news) printed in TBC two and three days later. Is it because there is no reporter on duty after a certain time? How have staffing levels changed over the years? How many reporters were on staff 10 years ago? 20?

We received a letter from a reader posing a number of commonly-asked questions. I spoke at length to the reader, who wishes to remain anonymous, but here are some of her questions, and my replies:

This seems like a good week to bring up one of the favorite topics of correspondents to this column — the weather page.
As you may recall, some time ago we mentioned that weather questions were piling up like hail in Fresno.

Reader: The April 3 television listings [included a program entitled] "If You're Just an Evil Bitch Then Get Over It" Bridget accuses Henry of murder. (N)
Is the Californian trying to be "cool" or ignorant of what's in their paper or just lowering the old standards of good taste?

Reader: I just take exception to the front page of (last) Saturday's paper with that inmate being made out to be a hero in the L.A. Times article. I think they could have picked someone better than someone who tried to kill another person and he goes to prison and assaults staff there as well.
I just disagree with having that guy on the front page of the paper regardless -- anywhere in the paper for that matter. but let alone the front page.

The Californian is introducing a subscription model on BakersfieldCalifornian.com, the news-only website launched earlier this year. Our "metered" model allows up to 10 unrestricted news-article views per month but requires a paid subscription for unlimited access to news content.
The Californian joins hundreds of newspapers around the state, nation and world that have launched online-subscription models over the past year. The Los Angeles Times launched online subscriptions earlier this month, and other valley and regional papers have had restricted access or will soon follow suit.

Reader: I am writing on behalf of my husband and myself regarding the articles that were in [last] Sunday's paper.
We have been members of RiverLakes Community Church for over 30 years. We have known Dave Champness and his family for over 25 years and we and our family have grown in our walk with our Lord under his ministry. We were there the day he gave his last message about why he was resigning. He was totally transparent about his weakness and we are supportive with his decision to leave to strengthen his marriage. Our church is praying for all of them.

Reader: Regarding the February 28th edition.
Let's see, slaughter of more innocent civilians in Syria (and elsewhere), famine and violence in the Horn Of Africa, two significant state primary elections, more law enforcement-involved shootings in our community and further mortal violence within our citizenry, a plague of property invasions within my own neighborhood... just for starters.

Reader: The Wall to Wall Bicycle Ride is a national event and yet the article and picture aren't on the front page. I was disappointed to get my paper, let's just say.
Many volunteers, including myself, have been hard at work creating this historic event for over eight months. Not to mention the training that Jeremy, Wesley and Dale have been doing.
