SOUND OFF: Catching up on concerns -- and a couple of kudos

Reader: I noticed in today's (Jan. 8) obituaries there were two people who died before they were born.

SOUND OFF: Your comment logic is illogical

Reader: On Dec. 11, you answered a reader's question regarding why you frequently do not allow comments on on-line stories. Your reply was that you have found that stories that relate to crime or the courts attract many comments that are hurtful or prejudiced in one way or another.

Yet on both on-line stories on Dec. 17, regarding the fatal accident involving the KCSO unit and two pedestrians [in Oildale], you allowed comments. The majority of comments were anti-law enforcement and contained many assumptions from people as to what happened.

Fake headlines strike readers' funny bones

Reader: My husband and I are still laughing over your "Headlines we'd like to see in 2012" (Dec. 30.) It was quite possibly the best thing I've ever read in the newspaper. Thank you very much! It is great.

But what do you really think, comics readers?

Arthur: We've got a single topic today:

I'm sorry that you didn't consider Fred Basset as "family oriented."

Fred Basset, we hardly knew ye

Arthur: Not everyone was thrilled with our change on the comics page:

SOUND OFF: Some thought our Postal cover was a turkey

Reader: Regarding your Dec. 6 article on the United States Postal Service: I have been an employee of the postal service for over 13 years at our local processing plant on Pegasus Drive.

Though I do agree with your article and the impact it will have on our community and the United States, on behalf of myself and my co-workers I am greatly offended by your picture of our goose being cooked. The closure of our local plant could greatly impact some 200 plus employees.

The line for the Lois fan club starts right here

Reader: My wife Loretta and I have been enjoying The Californian ever since we moved to Bakersfield in '97.

It certainly didn't take us long to get hooked on Lois Henry's columns. Lamar Kerley's Oct. 31 letter, "Chairman of the fan club," was a delight to read, and we very much echo his comments.

Moore was less, in this reader's eyes

Reader: On Tuesday night, Nov. 8, author Wes Moore gave a presentation at CSUB. His book, "The Other Wes Moore", was the assigned text for the First Year Experience and for all freshman English composition classes at CSUB, as well as the book for the "One Book, One Bakersfield, One Kern" program. Several area high schools also used the text in their classes.

Over 1,700 students, faculty, and community members packed the hall. There were so many in attendance that overflow rooms were needed. When he climbed the stage, the cheering and applause was of the sort normally reserved for rock stars and professional athletes.

SOUND OFF: The scent of perfume isn't everyone's idea of good news

Reader: Just wondering why we, in the "Garden of the Sun" (Arvin) only get 1 or 2 of the ad inserts on Sunday. Usually, we get Target and Rite Aid. Sometimes we will get Sears or JC Penny.

I'm wondering if all of Bakersfield is in the same situation. I'd sure like to see ads for Office Max, Office Depot, Best Buy, Kohl's, just to name a few.

SOUND OFF: Small type, big issues and disturbing descriptions

Reader: Why is the attached (page F2 10/23) printed in such very small print that one needs a magnifying glass in order to read the article?

    Regards,
