Fight against proposed demolition facility in NW

I applaud the Kern County Board of Supervisors for listening and understanding the concerns of the residents opposed to the startup of a concrete and demolition waste material collection, recovery, and recycling facility in the northwest area of Bakersfield.

This meeting was a sharp contrast to the county Planning Commission meeting, where concerns of the surrounding neighborhoods were dismissed. The Board of Supervisors meeting on Nov. 3 recognized that this conflict between the property developer and the residents in the surrounding neighborhoods stems from lack of communication and planning from both the county and city planning departments.

They asked, "Can this be prevented in the future?" Let's hope so. In the meantime, the conflict continues: A heavy industrial business such as this does not belong 550 to 1,000 feet away feet away from neighborhoods. The planned project is surrounded on three sides by neighborhoods and a planned park.

There are real concerns of noise from crushing of construction materials, increased pollution and particular matter, possible asbestos and lead dust being released and added truck traffic on Hageman Road. Recycling is a great idea, but this is not the right location. I urge you to contact your supervisor to voice your opposition to this project.
