Firefighter joke

In light of the recent stories and letters about firefighter pay and benefits, I wish to share an old joke my father, a firefighter, told me many moons ago.

Local firefighters union reps and the city council were in a heated debate over firemen's pay and benefits. The union reps pointed out the 24 hour days they worked. A council member shot back quickly that the firemen slept eight hours of that 24 hour shift. A rep replied, "Yes, but we sleep alone."
