Concert uplifting

From the first downbeat of Director Col. Michael Colburn's baton, the recent United States Marine Band concert at Rabobank Convention Center was a huge hit with the capacity crowd.

Everyone was inspired by the exceptional musicians and sense of patriotism. Memorable pieces that were especially enjoyed by the audience were the renditions of some of John Philip Sousa's most popular works, including "The Stars and Stripes Forever."

The very auditorium seemed to be transported away by the lilting Irish tunes warbled by baritone Gunnery Sgt. Kevin Bennear, who was able to infuse each piece with the right combination of passion and musical craftsmanship.

A special note of appreciation is due to all the sponsors, such as the Bakersfield Council Navy League of the United States and The Californian, as well as to the men and women of "The President's Own," all of whom made this shining night possible.
