SSI misconceptions

The Sunday Forum article on Social Security by Warren Coats revealed he is an angry fellow. ("Younger people shouldn't have to support elders," Oct. 18.)

Social Security was never intended to furnish everything, but the American public has been educated to spend everything they can get their hands on, and more.

One doesn't have to put in much to get more out. Some don't put anything in. The system is a catch-all. So, it isn't really Social Security, it's a tax to take from some, give to some, and use most for something else. Not quite up to socialism standards.

The Social Security pot has always been, and continues to be, a free bank for our beloved politicians. A pot full of money, like a crisis, is not to be wasted.

If people were allowed to invest their own Social Security funds at a reasonable return, instead of having to constantly fill the pot for our beloved politicians' pet projects, there wouldn't be a pot to steal from. (Unacceptable, of course). People would be much better off. The needs we are constantly facing would just go away. It's that personal "responsibility" everyone seems to want to shy away from.

It can only change if the basic problem is faced. Replace the government with personal responsibility. It works everywhere it is tried. Time only runs one way. If you believe that everyone else should be taxed for you, remember they are aging along with you. It's just the aging of everyone. Relax, and enjoy as best you can.
