Health benefits for people who don't care
As I waited for my political science course to begin at Bakersfield College, two of my peers broached the topic of government health care coverage. One said she would settle for any government health care, even if it was of poor quality. My other classmate agreed.
As they were opining on the issue of health care, they pulled their packs of cigarettes out of their pockets and proceeded to smoke in front of me. Apart from smoking, they did not appear to exercise often and were a bit thick in the middle. I found the irony of the situation humorous.
Why should you pay for the health care of people who do not even take care of themselves? It would be as if your uncle with the gambling problem -- the one with the sunshades, leopard skin jeans and quart of gel in his hair -- showed up at your house asking for a loan to cover his debts. Would you lend any him money?
The New York Times reported that President Obama wants to extend coverage to the 45 million of our uninsured. The question is: How many of those people are already able to afford health care, but just do not want to? Instead, they choose to buy something else, like a luxury vehicle for instance. Why should you have to subsidize their spendthrift choices? Let the grasshopper keep his car and the ant his healthcare.
