Had her for a minute
Columnist Valerie Schultz recently wrote a very poignant story about the care she is participating in regarding the final stages of her father's illness. I'm sure many hearts were touched.
But her June 14 column erased any empathy on my part left over from her previous column. It's the "gay marriage" thing again. She scolded those of us who still uphold the dignity of marriage as being between a man and a woman, exclusively. The whole of civilization is based on this revered union.
Schultz professes to be Catholic but surely she must know that her opinion in this regard is not in conformity with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Being compassionate is one thing but should not color one's beliefs to the extent of overthrowing centuries of traditional marriage.
If, by some miscarriage of justice, legislators grant that the word "marriage" be attached to gay unions, it will not change the indisputable fact that marriage is and always has been between a man and a woman as established even before the time of Christ. The preservation of our once moral society depends on this protection.
