Gandhi once said, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

The recent "Tails of Bakersfield" showed that our community does care about its animals. Hundreds of local citizens were able to tell us heartwarming anecdotes about their beloved pets, while at the same time supporting local animal advocacy groups. These organizations work every day in the community to ensure the health and safety of animals who have fallen through the cracks and who need loving homes.

On behalf of the Bakersfield SPCA, I would like to thank The Californian for this wonderful community awareness series and to thank the many donors who contributed to the Bakersfield SPCA. Not only did this project bring in needed funds for our work, it brought extensive publicity to our efforts and services.

This year during The Californian's campaign, our shelter adopted out over 200 more animals than in the same time period in 2007. This has been a win-win situation for our organization and our adopted animals. These animals have now found new "forever" homes, thanks to the efforts of The Californian.
