How ironic that the latest Bakersfield City Council meeting included a discussion about the proposed removal of a young planning commissioner, and several speakers addressed that it smacked of the "old boy" network and "back door politics." As a resident of Westpark, I'm not surprised that this issue "appalled" and "embarrassed" the other council members. It brought out into the open what has happened in the past and, in my opinion, is currently happening to our neighborhood.
Integrity? Honesty? Harvey Hall's letter to Kern COG clearly states that the city would not support this alignment again, but "things change," according to him. They only changed for this neighborhood by turning the decision over to Caltrans and yielding to pressure from former Congressman Bill Thomas.
Note to citizens of Bakersfield: Our elected leaders will tell you what you want to hear. They will let you spend money to improve your homes and then pull them right out from under you.
Today it may be Westpark, but anyone who thinks their neighborhood is safe needs to remember we were told this, in writing, eight years ago, and look where we are today. Oh, I forgot -- "things change!"
