Kevin McCarthy has taken this community for granted for years. I guess it’s to be expected after winning reelection five or six times. But now he is championing a new tax plan that will save Donald Trump and the richest 1 percent of taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually, while doing little if anything for almost all of the Kern County taxpayers.
McCarthy supports a revised tax plan that will eliminate the federal deduction for state and local taxes. This provision was aimed particularly at California and other blue states like New York and New Jersey. But congressional representatives there, among other states, voted against this provision notwithstanding their party affiliation.
In addition, the new tax plan eliminates the federal income tax deduction for interest on student loans. So college students here in Bakersfield should now understand exactly who does not have your back.
It’s easy to understand why McCarthy refuses to schedule a town hall meeting that includes real, live in-person voters. It must be easy on the radio, or talking on the phone, to explain his positions. But to look people in the eye and explain to people here in Bakersfield why they should lose important tax deductions they rely on must just be too difficult.
