My father taught me to safely shoot a gun when I was 10 years old. He gave me my first rifle at age 12 and took me deer hunting. The next year he gave me my first shotgun and took me pheasant hunting.
When my son was a boy I taught him how to safely shoot a gun. He is now teaching his daughters how to safely shoot a gun.
When my grandson gets older I will teach him how to safely shoot a gun.
In 51 years of owning numerous firearms, some of which some uninformed people would call "assault rifles," I have never used one to kill anyone. I have legally carried a loaded pistol on school grounds, at the Kern County Fair, at the mall, at the Rabobank Arena, to the supermarket, and all over California when I have traveled. Again, I have never used one to kill anyone.
It is people like me who others should hope are present if an crazed active shooter starts firing at innocent people. And there are a lot of people like me out there.
