Kevin McCarthy must make a public statement stating that President Donald Trump is threatening our American democracy when he accuses Democrats of treasonous behavior when they do not stand and applaud during his State of the Union address.

Treason in the United States can carry the death penalty, and the use of it is a very serious matter. For a close ally of Trump to tolerate the loose use of the word “treason” by Trump is to be complicit in the destruction of our democratic principles.

Loss of democratic freedoms is a very slippery slope. A  member of the opposition in Kenya has been charged with “treason” for a symbolic display against Kenyan President Kenyatta. Don’t think it can’t happen here.
