Our 'angry mob' warning

We encountered an amusing juxtaposition of reports during our now-daily survey of all things health-care related Wednesday morning.

One was Rep. Jim Moran's town hall meeting in Reston, Va., Tuesday night, which, according to CNN, "spiraled into chaos and displays of political theater as opponents ... spent two hours trying to shout down" the host.

The other was a blog entry from Bakersfield's Andy Stanley, who likened Wednesday's editorial in The Californian calling for respect and civility at Rep. Kevin McCarthy's Wednesday night town hall event to an elevated terror alert warning. The editorial's headline, Stanley wrote, "might as well read 'Heading to the town hall? Beware the angry mob.'"

McCarthy is popular hereabouts and health care reform is not, so with limited diversity of opinion, angry mobs were never especially likely at CSUB. But on what planet does a reminder about civility, given the tone of recent town halls across the country, come across as out of line? Well, on Planet Stanley.
