Exploding tables. I’m not the only one who had a glass table explode for no apparent reason. Patti Frost, Design Consultant for Rosedale Tile & Marble, had it happen to her too.

However, while some people look at a million pieces of glass on the patio and see disaster, Patti sees an opportunity for which some of us have been secretly yearning.
“Now is your chance to be creative,” Patti wrote. “Have a piece of plywood cut to fit the frame of your table and you can tile the top of it with a beautiful mosaic of small tiles that match your outdoor decor. (I wish I had saved my frame) good luck.”
MEAN LEMON SQUARES
Recently, I wrote a column about Marilyn Fanucchi, who spent a year making stained glass windows for her church in Greenfield. She also makes a mean lemon square. I know because I ate two, but wanted three. How many could Mr. Fanucchi eat anyway?
Here is Marilyn Fanucchi’s recipe for Lemon Squares.
Crust: 1 cup butter 1/2 cup powdered sugar 2 cups flour soften butter and add sugar and flour. Press in 9 by 12 pan, bake 350 until it is brown or 15 minutes
Topping: 4 eggs 4 tablespoons of flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 7 tablespoons of lemon juice (two lemons) 2 cups of sugar Mix and pour over crust, return to oven, 350 until set-25 minutes.
ANOTHER $6 LUNCH
Last week, I talked about one of the great $6 lunches in town — chili fries, a sweet jalapeño muffin, a soft chocolate chip cookie and a cold glass of water at Jake’s. This week it’s the Coffee Cottage, my new favorite coffee shop located in the cottages across from Rabobank Arena.
You’re not looking for much from your coffee house. Start with being greeted by a friendly, first-thing-in-the-morning face, then a decent cup of coffee and perhaps a little pastry. I don’t think it hurts to have a peanut butter bagel under the glass, but maybe that’s just me.
Remember Java Jazz, the first coffee house in Bakersfield? It was across the street from the old Fike’s on 19th St. (Fike’s is now a spa and Bob Vibe and his wife are breathing the good air in the Lake Tahoe area.
Java Jazz was mobbed to begin with. A coffee house. In Bakersfield. Could you believe it?
Now coffee houses are a presence in the yellow pages. Each has its own customers. Customers who depend on them for an innocent morning ritual.
I don’t even know Wendy, the owner’s, last name. However, she’s friendly, has a steady stream of customers who look forward to seeing her and she serves a good spicy chai tea.
QUOTABLE
Somebody sent me this quote. I found it beautiful, but even more than that, something to work toward in our own lives in whatever way we can.
“The day will come when, after harnessing space, the winds, the tides and gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love. And on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, we shall have discovered fire.” —Teilhard de Chardin
