It's not very often you hear of a set of twins having different birthdays, let alone two different birth years, but that's the case for twins Joaquín and Aitana Ontiveros, born in Delano on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

The twins' mother, Maria Flores of Earlimart, gave birth to Joaquín (5 pounds, 11 ounces) at 11:58 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2017, and his sister Aitana at 12:16 a.m., Jan. 1, 2018 (4 pounds, 10 ounces).

Maria, a farm laborer, was given a due date of Jan. 27, but she went into labor prematurely on New Year's Eve at 7 p.m., the Earlimart Times Delta wrote in a Facebook post.

Delano Regional Medical Center "is honored to play a significant role in this 2018 New Year delivery of baby twins," the hospital's Facebook page announced, "while extending a sincere appreciation to the dedicated DRMC Staff and Physicians for all they do!"

The Earlimart Times Delta said Maria and her husband, who have three other daughters, took home more than $3,000 worth of baby supplies as a gift.
