Former Stockdale girls basketball standout Melissa Sweat, who transferred to Madera Ranchos-Liberty for her senior year, made a verbal commitment to play for San Diego State, The Fresno Bee reported.
Verbal commitments are non-binding; Sweat can sign an official letter of intent as early as Wednesday.
Sweat was The Californian's Player of the Year as a sophomore and last year as a junior, when she helped Stockdale win the Division I Central Section championship. She moved to Madera with her family when her dad was hired for a new job.
Madera Ranchos-Liberty, a Division IV team, was 1-21 last season.
Two local teams hit the road today to play for section girls tennis titles.
Garces (26-1), which has lost only to Division V Bakersfield Christian this year, will visit Visalia-Redwood for the D-II title in a rematch of last year's final that Redwood won 8-1. This year's final is scheduled for 3 p.m. at In Shape-Visalia Racquet Club.
The Rams have every starter back from that team, and two freshmen starters, including No. 1 Gracie Jacobs. Redwood has two-time defending singles champ Gabrielle Gatewood.
Tehachapi visits Porterville in a rematch of last year's Division III final. The Warriors are looking for their second straight title.
In town, SEYL and SWYL cross country teams vie for titles at Hart Park, with varsity races at 2:20 p.m.
In volleyball, Liberty (10-1 SEYL) visits Bakersfield (11-0) in a match that will decide the SEYL title. Centennial, which clinched the Southwest Yosemite League with a Tuesday win, can complete an ubeaten SWYL title by beating West.
Some of Bakersfield's finest boys basketball players will give a glimpse of the season to come Saturday at the Bakersfield United Fall League All-Star Games.
Three games will take place at 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Bakersfield United Gymnasium, 1616 U St, with the winners of the first two games playing in the third.
Rosters include Stockdale's Jordan Burris, who will sign a letter of intent Wednesday to play at Nevada, Liberty's Sam Marcus and Westin Hill, Frontier's Michael Marcus, Garces' Chris Dixon and Ridgeview's Kaylin Evans.
Frontier and Stockdale are selling tickets for their SWYL showdown at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Stockdale.
Tickets are available in either school's finance office between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. today and between 8 a.m. and noon on Friday.
