Boys cross country
Runner of the Year
Cameron Miller * Sr * Stockdale
The pace-setter and usually the top finisher for the nationally ranked Mustangs, Miller led as much by example as he did vocally as a coach on the course. The Stanford hopeful finished with teammate Blake Haney at the county championships (14:47), was third in the section (15:43) and eight in the state (15:23) before qualifying for the Foot Locker Nationals by finishing sixth in the West Region.
First team
Connor Fisher * Jr * Stockdale
Part of the Mustangs' dominating top five, Fisher finished seventh in the county (15:27), ninth in the Division I section race (16:12) and 44th at state in 16:03, the third-best time of any local.
Angel Gil * Jr * Shafter
A year after toiling on the Generals' frosh-soph team, Gil zoomed to the front, winning the SSL title (15:49) and the Division III section title (16:02). He also finished third in the county (15:10) and had the fifth-best local time at state (16:08).
Blake Haney * Soph * Stockdale
As if his sophomore season weren't special enough -- it already included first-place finishes in the SWYL and county races (alongside Miller) -- he punctuated it with a big kick to a Division I section championship in 15:37 at Woodward Park.
Curtis Kelly * Sr * Stockdale
Split No. 3 duties for the mighty Mustangs with Fisher. Kelly was fourth in the SWYL (15:56 alongside Fisher), sixth in the county (15:23) and sixth in the Division I section race (15:57), helping Stockdale to the first D-I boys title by a Bakersfield team since 1971.
Jose Monrreal * Sr * McFarland
The Cougars' top runner always is formidable, and Monrreal was no exception: Fourth in the county (15:17), sixth in the D-III section race (16:30) and the sixth-best local time at state (16:26).
Omar Nunez * Sr * Delano
After finishing in 16:11, second to Angel Gil in the Division III section finals, Nunez turned the tables and edged Gil with a 16:06 at state for a 38th-place finish as the top local in Division III and fourth-best overall. Also eighth at county finals (15:29).
