Grant Desme remembers coming to Sam Lynn Ball Park as a kid, but he wasn't exactly the type to idolize the California League players he saw.
"I remember going, 'These guys are terrible,'" said Desme. "Now I'm going to be playing there."
Desme, a Stockdale High and Cal Poly SLO alumnus, will be in town this weekend as a member of the Stockton Ports. He was called up last week from low Class A Kane County in the Oakland A's organization to high Class A Stockton.
One of the first things Desme did when he heard the news, he said, was check Stockton's schedule to see when the Ports would be in Bakersfield. Turns out, he had to wait just nine games.
"It's always nice to be able to stay at home and get a home-cooked meal," he said.
The Blaze entertain the Ports at 7:45 each of the next three night. Tonight's game will be followed by the Blaze's Fireworks Spectacular.
Entering Stockton's Friday night game, Desme, a right fielder, was hitting .200 at this level (6-for-30) but had two home runs, a double and five RBIs. He had struck out 14 times.
"There's a few things I've got to work on," Desme said. "It's definitely tough competition."
As for Sam Lynn -- well, Desme played there a few times while at Stockdale, so he knows the ins and outs of the 68-year-old park that's been the source of Blaze-leaving-Bakersfield rumors for years.
"I'm going to be the only guy that's gonna be happy to be playing there," Desme said. "It's going to be weird. But it'll be nice to be in front of friends and family."
