Asia Chesley of Stockdale High School attempts the 5'6" mark in the Girls High Jump at the CIF State Track & Field Championship on Saturday, June 4 at Buchanan High School in Fresno, Ca.
Alex Collatz of Stockdale High School competes in the Discus Throw at the CIF State Track & Field Championship on Saturday, June 4 at Buchanan High School in Fresno, Ca.
Alex Collatz of Stockdale High School speaks with coach Dave Lonsinger, left, after falling during competition and passing on her final throws in the discus at the CIF State Track and Field Championships. Collatz suffered a torn ACL during volleyball season and didn't want to risk further injury in a wet ring to defend her state title.
CLOVIS -- So this is where the fairy tale met its harsh end, with Alex Collatz in tears Saturday alongside the fence outside Buchanan High School's baseball field during the CIF State Track and Field Championships.
Rainy conditions, a slick discus ring and Collatz's wounded knee combined to force the defending state champion to forgo her final two throws and end her career in seventh place.
"It's hard," she said. "It would have meant everything. That's what I worked so hard for. That's what I thought about when I was one-legged on the couch, my knee swollen like a pumpkin. That's what I wanted, was to come back and win state."
But, inside Veterans Memorial Stadium, another fairy tale was only beginning. Asia Chesley, one of Collatz's Stockdale teammates but just a precocious freshman, came from anonymity to win the bronze medal, tying with two others, in the girls high jump.
"The contrast just blows me away," Stockdale coach Dave Lonsinger said. "To go from feeling so bad for Alex to come in to see this -- and within 30 minutes. It's incredible."
The irony goes deeper: Collatz is just nine months removed from a devastating right knee injury that she worked six hours a day to overcome; Chesley hyper-extended her right knee early in the season and didn't think she'd be here.
"I was doubting all track meets," Chesley said. "I was ready to give up. I'm glad I got to pull through and make it."
Chesley matched her personal record by clearing 5-4 on the first try, then failed in three attempts to clear 5-6. But only two jumpers made it to 5-8, so Chesley went into a tiebreaker with four others. Because she had made her first attempt at both 5-2 and 5-4, Chesley had staked her claim to third.
"We talk about that from the first practice, her and my assistant, Dion Guiliano," Lonsinger said. "Make the first jumps. You don't know how many meets that can win you, because that's the tiebreaker. And it manifested itself in what nobody thought would happen."
The future, naturally, appears bright.
"Next year, hopefully I'll come back and get first," Chesley said.
But while that chapter has just started, Collatz saw her high school career come to a most painful end. She slipped and fell hard to the pavement on her fourth throw, and her father and coach, Alan Collatz, stepped in and told her no more.
"At that point, the coaching is out the window; you just have to show her you have compassion," he said. "But it was a hard fall, and we just couldn't risk her hurting that knee or something else."
Collatz tried three pairs of shoes but still slipped on all four throws.
"I couldn't even get my footing," said Collatz, who relies on quick steps rather than brute strength for her distance. "I kept backing off and (the throws) would go straight up in the air."
Her best mark was a pedestrian 134-0 -- more than 30 feet shorter than her qualifying mark yesterday and nearly 50 behind her pre-injury PR of 180-9, which led the nation last year.
"She's been through a lot this year, and she's been so successful in the past," Alan Collatz said. "But there will be another day. She'll learn from this. I know it's painful now, but she has a long career in front of her."
Collatz still needs another surgery to clean up scar tissue in the knee, in which she tore her anterior crucial ligament and cartilage during a September volleyball match. She'll head off to USC next year, but that chapter seemed far off to her Saturday.
"I've been so tunnel vision just thinking about this," Collatz said. "I have no idea what I'm going to do."
But as Lonsinger reminded, for every end there is another beginning.
"We're blessed to have a kid (Collatz) with that kind of character, that kind of strength," he said. "And I think she showed a lot of our kids, including Asia, how to fight back when it isn't easy.
"So you see the contrast. Sometimes things happen and there's nothing you can do about it. And then you have another athlete, where you think, 'No way in the world,' and here she is."
