If the Garces High football team had scored its average of 43 points per game, it would have earned a commanding victory Friday against East.

But the Rams didn't stop there.

With five touchdowns in the fourth quarter alone, Garces throttled the Blades with 11 trips to the end zone in a record-setting 80-21 win.

"We wanted to make history," said senior Jalen Sykes, who rushed for three touchdowns.

"The goal this week was 72-plus, and we had a lot of motivation."

Sykes, who had five scores and 266 yards in last year's game against East, took 15 carries for 194 yards this time around.

The elusive running back scored his 20th touchdown of the season on a gridiron he knows well.

It's where he played recreational-league football when he was a young child.

"I love this field," Sykes said.

"It feels like home. I feel comfortable here."

It looked like his teammates did as well, ripping off huge chunks of yardage and thwarting what had been a potent rushing attack by the Blades.

The Rams (8-1, 3-0 SEYL) raced out to a 37-7 lead at halftime thanks in part to two touchdowns from Sykes.

On his second score, he waited patiently in the backfield before bursting through a narrow seam up the middle and flying 70 yards to the end zone.

"He must drink some magical potion or something," Garces coach John Roberts said.

"He makes big plays. We've seen it his whole career."

Fellow running back Zack Puente had two touchdowns and 69 yards, while junior Patrick Hellman recorded the last two scores of the game, including the one that gave the Rams a new record for points in a game, and added a 35-yard interception return for good measure.

East (2-7, 2-2 SEYL) came out strong in the third quarter, putting two quick touchdowns on the board, but Garces put an end to their comeback bid almost as fast, outscoring the Blades 36-0 in the final frame.

"We came out sluggish in the second half, but we picked it up again," Roberts said. "We weren't looking for records."

Roberts pulled his starters with less than three minutes remaining in the game and his team ahead 65-21.

The reserves scored twice.

The Rams have a chance to maintain their perfect league record in their regular-season finale at home against North next week.

East's last game is at West.
