Local bowlers, let's all support National Bowling Week, grab your bowling ball and let's go bowling during the dates of July 30 through Aug. 6.

World Record Day is Saturday, Aug. 6, as millions of American bowlers take part in what will possibly be a record amount of people that come out and bowl on a single day. Last year over 900,000 games were bowled in a single day and this year we want to make history and record over a million.

Many bowling centers are offering a free game of bowling and bowlers may go to Gobowling.com and receive a coupon for this free game of bowling! Be a part of history and help break the record!

Regency Lanes (820 Real Road) will be offering one FREE game of bowling and FREE shoe rental to adult and youth bowlers that show up on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Additional games will be $2. Participants will be asked to fill out a form that also puts them in a drawing to win an iPad 2. For further information, contact Regency at (661) 325-6428.

AMF Southwest Lanes (3610 Wible Road) and AMF Westchester Lanes (1819 30th Street) will be offering any league bowlers from any local center a special league rate of $2.09 per game per person PLUS a buy-one-get-one deal from the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 6. They will also be honoring any of the Gobowling online coupons for a FREE game. For further information, contact AMF Southwest at (661) 834-2695 or AMF Westchester at (661) 324-4966.

This campaign is put on nationally to help build each center's database, get more bowlers interested in league bowling and to help build the upcoming fall leagues. Be sure to grab a 2011-12 Fall league schedule when you visit your local centers. Last week, the BPAA (Bowling Proprietors Association of America) released findings for a 2010 Simmons Research Data study that showed bowling to be the No. 1 participant sport in the U.S. According to this study which analyzed 24,463 adult consumers in the US aged 18 and older, bowling had a participation level of nearly a quarter of the population (22 percent) which gave it the top spot under sports like basketball (15 percent), golf (13 percent), baseball (13 percent), aerobics (11.9 percent), and yoga (9 percent).

YOUTH AWARDS BANQUET/BOWLING PARTY THIS SATURDAY

Junior bowlers will be out in force this coming weekend on Saturday, July 23, at Regency Lanes. The fun and games will be starting at 1 p.m. with the awards banquet, bowling and pizza party as we celebrate the achievements of the past season. Juniors get in FREE and parents are asked to bring a raffle prize as we try to make sure every junior bowler takes a raffle prize home. Those who can't make it on Saturday but would like to donate a raffle gift may do so by dropping off a gift at any of the local Pro Shops or see Lisa Isbell at AMF Southwest Lanes or Ron Andrews at Regency Lanes. Bring your bowling equipment and your folks and be ready for a relaxing fun afternoon at Regency!

EBONITE DEMO DAY AT REGENCY IS JULY 26

While we are on the wave of FREE offerings, here's another! Come test some new bowling balls on the market, or soon to be on the market, for FREE! That's right, Bowler's Edge Pro Shop is bringing a FREE Ebonite Demo Day to Bakersfield and it takes place on Tuesday night, July 26, at Regency. This event starts at 5:30 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m. that night. Come out and try an array of Ebonite new releases by Track, Columbia, Hammer, and Ebonite. All demo balls will be 15 pounds. What a great way to find a new ball that works for you before the fall leagues start! For further information or to sign up for this event, contact Bowler's Edge at (661) 324-6303.

AMF WESTCHESTER LANES WELCOMES NEW MANAGER

Starting this week, AMF Westchester Lanes has a new manager and his name is James Blakely. Stop by and meet him. Wayne Miller will now be the Assistant Manager. We will have more information on both James and Wayne in an upcoming column.

WEEKLY HONOR SCORES

* Congratulations to Cameron Welch who shot his first ever 300 game on Wednesday, July 13, bowling in the Las Vegas league at AMF Southwest Lanes.

* Also bowling a 300 game was Donald Benner, who was pre-bowling for the Mega Ball league at Regency last week. Unfortunately, unopposed pre-bowled and make-up games are no longer recognized by USBC (United States Bowling Congress). This, unfortunately, was not the only time Benner has bowled a perfecto but his other perfecto also was during a make-up.

* And a pair of 299 games were rolled by two different people, during the same game of the same league at AMF Southwest Lanes on Thursday night, July 7, in the Guys & Dolls league. First one was rolled by "Bowler of the Week" PD Richardson who left a 9 pin for his 299 game. Then, Josh Royal entered his tenth frame with all strikes to also leave a 9 pin for his 299 game. Royal said this was his highest game ever and, remarkably, he has only been bowling for one and half years!
