To say Darrin Dorsey can do it all on the basketball court might be an understatement, especially considering a big part of what he does never finds its way onto the stat sheet.

The former Bakersfield College standout, who transferred to NAIA Division II power Dakota Wesleyan, leads his new team in scoring, assists and steals, all the while showcasing his talents as a coach on the floor.

"I consider myself one of the leaders on the team," said the 6-foot-2 guard. "Hopefully, I'll try to get into coaching when I'm through playing. I've always wanted to be a college coach. It comes second nature to me, so I think it would be an easy transition."

The same could be said for Dorsey and his move from Bakersfield to Mitchell, S.D., population 14,558 as of the 2000 census.

Dorsey is averaging 17.7 points, 5.8 assists, 5.1 rebounds, three steals and one block in 27 games for the Tigers (22-5), who are ranked No. 7 in the nation in the latest NAIA Division II poll, riding an 11-game win streak and are one game from clinching the Great Plains Athletic Conference title.

In Dorsey's last game -- a 68-54 victory Wednesday over Mount Marty College (S.D.) -- the Phoenix native scored 30 points on 10-of-14 shooting, and also had five rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block.

"The game before I had a pretty bad night, so the next game I wanted to make up for it," said Dorsey, after scoring 11 points in a win over Concordia (Mich.) on Feb. 6. "I had sort of a chip on my shoulder. I came out a little more aggressive and wanted to get out of the slump. It was just going my way that night. The basket was looking like it was the ocean."

Ironically, the ocean must seem a long way from his current home, especially considering it was 18 degrees when the Tigers finished practice Tuesday afternoon.

"There is snow all over the place," said Dorsey, who is a Sports Management major. "I'd seen snow before. When I was young we'd go and play in the snow and have fun, but it's not as fun when you have to deal with it every day.

"The first time I came out it here is when I came out here for school, so I didn't know anything about it. This is my first time out here in the cold. It was an adjustment I had to make. I can't walk around in basketball shorts anymore I have to wear pants all the time."
