Kristen Reynier's perfectly placed shot lifted the Bakersfield girls soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Garces at Griffith Field on Wednesday night.
Reynier's goal sailed in over the over the outstretched arms of Garces keeper Sarah McDermott at the 6-minute mark of the second 10-minute overtime period. The score came off of a free kick from 30 yards out.
Garces' Kaitlin Swift had scored the equalizer in second-half stoppage time, chipping the ball past downed BHS keeper Bailey Ross and a Bakersfield defender and sending the match into overtime.
With the playoffs just two weeks away, a win couldn't have come at a better time for the Drillers as the battle for the Southeast Yosemite League title is heating up.
"It was a great win; Kristen scored a great goal," Bakersfield coach Brian Walker said. "We dropped our first game against Garces 2-0 earlier in the season, and they are always a tough team to play. The girls battled hard tonight and it put us in a good position to win league."
The teams played a tight first half as neither was able to connect with any long outlet passes or control the match with any extended periods of possession.
Bakersfield (12-4-3, 7-1-0 SEYL) finally broke the deadlock when Nicole Storslett scored at the 9-minute mark, tucking a shot just under the crossbar from 25 yards out, giving Bakersfield a 1-0 advantage.
Swift missed an opportunity to give Garces the go-ahead goal in overtime, firing a rocket off the near post from just atop the area.
Garces (12-3-4, 7-2-1) out shot Bakersfield 11-6.
BHS plays at Foothill while Garces will host West on Friday.
