All one had to do was look at the Liberty defense to see how the Patriots downed West High Friday night.
Liberty (1-2) allowed only two first downs in the game -- none in the second half -- in a 14-0 victory at Liberty.
"We just put it together at one time," said junior defensive lineman Cody Temple, one of the top Patriot defenders. "Linebackers, everyone -- we all come together. Coach (Rick) Brogdon gets us ready."
Brogdon, Liberty's defensive coordinator, plays a major role each week, head coach Tony Mills said.
"He's outstanding," Mills said. "He gets our kids in the right places all the time. He teaches the linemen their assignments. Great discipline. He's one of the reasons our program is so successful."
West (1-2) had only 79 net yards of offense -- 50 rushing yards and 29 passing yards.
West also lost four fumbles and had an interception.
"I knew they were good, but I didn't know we wouldn't be able to move the ball on them," said West coach Chad Grider. "I thought we'd be able to do some things but obviously we weren't able to. They are definitely the best defense we've faced."
One of West's fumbles, recovered by Liberty's Tyler Raper on the second play of the third quarter, gave Liberty possession on the West 28.
The game was scoreless at the time, and Liberty went to its strength -- straight at the West defense behind the Patriots' big and physical offensive line.
Carson Moyer got the touchdown on a 3-yard run.
Liberty, which had 279 rushing yards, put the game away with a 65-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, which consisted of 10 running plays.
Moyer tallied his second TD, a 1-yard run with 4:55 left. He finished with 138 yards on 38 carries.
Liberty quarterback Dillon Meadows added 109 yards on 16 carries.
West running back Mustafaa Cobb, who had more than 200 rushing yards one week earlier vs. East, did not have a run longer than six yards and finished with 44 yards on 14 carries.
"We thought our defense played pretty well," Grider said. "They just wore us down. And you can't turn the ball over."
