Independence High junior Tyler Schilhabel was out of a medically induced coma, and though he still had no feeling from the chest down, Schilhabel was in "good spirits" at Stanford Hospital, Falcons coach Sean McKeown said in an e-mail Tuesday morning.

Schilhabel had emergency spinal surgery early Monday after he was in an ATV accident in the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area on Sunday afternoon.

"I just spoke with Tyler and he was in good spirits and he thanks everyone for their thoughts and prayers," McKeown said in the e-mail. "I've been told that he will be transferred to a rehab center this week to start the rehabilitation process."

McKeown said he didn't know what facility the Schilhabel family was considering using.

Classes resumed at Independence on Tuesday after the Labor Day holiday. The Falcons plan on playing their home game at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Ridgeview.
