Trevor Glaser gets his car sideways coming out of a turn during a Super Late Model qualifying run Friday night at Bakersfield Speedway. Glaser, of Tangent, Ore., won the 30-lap main event.
It's a long way from home, but Trevor Glaser doesn't mind making the tow to Bakersfield Speedway.
"This is my new favorite racetrack," Glaser, of Tangent, Ore., said Friday night after racing to victory in the 30-lap Late Model feature in the opening night of the Budweiser Nationals.
Glaser last raced at the third-mile clay oval in March and left with a victory.
"I've gotta thank my crew for working hard to put this car back together," he said. "The week after I won here I crashed the car and broke my arm. I raced a couple of times in another car but this is the first race back in my car.
"Everybody runs clean here. The last two races I haven't had a dent on my car. I love this place."
Glaser took the lead from Bobby Hogge IV on the ninth lap and the biggest challange after that was all the lap traffic as the race ran caution free from the third lap.
Hogge, of Watsonville, fell off the frantic pace of Glaser in the waning laps but still managed to finish second. Steve Drake of San Luis Obispo was third, followed by Bakersfield drivers Robert Sanders and Brad Pounds.
Glaser won $2,000 for his efforts and has a chance to grab another $3,000 in a 50-lap feature race tonight.
"It's going to be tough," Glaser said of posting back-to-back wins. "There's a lot of good guys."
Kyle Heckman squeaked past Toby Randolph on the 12th lap then pulled away to win the 30-lap Super Street feature.
Heckman, of Nipomo, had a full straightaway lead over Randolph when a caution bunched the field with four laps remaining.
It took a lap after the restart for Heckman to pull away from Randolph and he wound up winning by several car lengths.
"I was just focused on hitting my marks and shooting off hard on exits," Heckman said of the late restart. "This is so awesome, to win this race is unbelievable."
The victory earned Heckman $1,200.
Randolph finished second, followed by Brady Bell, Billy Simkins and Tim Randolph.
Alex Stanford of Los Banos raced to an easy victory in the 12-lap Modified qualifier's race to earn the pole position for tonight's 40-lap feature. Stanford was nearly a half-lap ahead of Clay Daly, who will start from the outside to row one.
Troy Morris Jr. and Darrell Hood finished third and fourth, respectively, and will start in the second row.
Bakersfield's Jason Bannister won the 12-lap Hobby Stock qualifiers race and will start tonight's feature from the pole. Starting next to him will be Kevin Johnson with Gary Dutton and Bruce Johnson starting third and fourth, respectively.
Racing starts at 6.
