Garces girls win in OT, advance to water polo final

FRESNO -- Catherine Lugo scored the game-winning goal in the first of two 3-minute overtime periods Thursday as Garces edged Fresno-San Joaquin Memorial 8-7 in a CIF Central Section girls Division III water polo playoff semifinal.
Laura Meert scored three goals, Lugo and Ally Ruettgers had two apiece, and Elizabeth Lugo also scored for the Rams (15-3), who travel to Visalia Saturday to face defending champion Redwood High for the title.
The match will start at 12:15 p.m. at El Diamante High School.
Meagan Varga made 16 saves for Garces.
The Rams led 6-4 after three periods, with the Panthers outscoring Garces 3-1 in the fourth to force OT.
Catherine Lugo scored in the first minute of the first OT, and the Garces kept SJM scoreless the rest of the way.
