Runner of the Year
Erik Garcia, soph, McFarland
After a stunningly good freshman year, Garcia backed it up by winning the Kern County Championships at Hart Park at the wire over Jesus Villalpando, then ran the county's best time, 15:45, at the state meet, placing him 17th in Division III -- the second-best sophomore time in any division at the state meet.
First team
Blake Haney, fr, Stockdale
His 15:13 at the Kern County Championships quietly came in third place, and he was consistenly a top-three runner for the county champion Mustangs. Haney also ran 16:01 at the Central Section Championships, the second-best local time and sixth-best freshman time at the event.
Curtis Kelly, jr, Stockdale
An integral part of the Mustangs' powerful SWYL champions, Kelly was fifth in the county (15:27), had the fourth-best local time at the section (16:07) and third-best at state (15:54).
Cameron Miller, jr, Stockdale
SWYL champion was the best runner in the city, and he backed it up with Kern County's best time at the section meet (15:53) and second-best time at state (15:46), which placed him 42nd in the prestigious Division I race.
Jose Monrreal, jr, McFarland
Monrreal finished seventh at the 3-mile county race (15:32) before running solid times at the 5-kilometer section (16:25) and state (16:14) races for the Division III section champions.
Francisco Nava, sr, McFarland
The most experienced Cougar was a model of consistency, finishing sixth at the county and running 16:29 and 16:33 at Woodward Park in section and state meets.
Jesus Villalpando, soph, Shafter
His dive for the finish line at the county championships didn't quite beat Erik Garcia, but Villalpando had quite a year anyway. He won the section's Division III meet over Garcia the next week with a 16:05, then ran 16:21 at state.
