DELANO--The intensity and determination were there for Delano. But as the Tigers found out in their East Yosemite League showdown against powerful Tulare Union Friday night at Gene Beck Stadiun, talent still wins football games.
The Redskins used their size and speed advantage to dismantle the Tigers 49-14 for their 21st straight win.
"We played a great team," Delano co-coach Mario Millan said. "There are definitely top-three in the valley. They have good-sized kids and great athletes. But our kids played with a lot of heart tonight. We were very physical. We had our moments. They just had some guys, that even though our guys were in the right position, just happened to get the best of the situation."
Trevor Jones was 10-of-13 for 259 yards and had a season high five touchdowns passing for Tulare Union (8-0, 4-0 EYL), which jumped out to an early 35-7 and never looked back.
Two of the TD passes went to Edward Dilihunt, who also scored on a 29-yard run and 68-yard punt return.
"Delano is 6-1 for a reason," Tulare Union coach Darren Bennett said. "They played hard. I think our athletes just got them tonight."
Delano (6-2, 2-2 EYL) was led by Andy Martin Del Campo, who rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.
The Tigers held Redskins' star running back Xavier Stephens to a season low 74 yards. However, that was enough for Stephens to break the 1,000 yard mark for the season.
The Redskins out-gained the Tigers 364 to 278. "You pick your poison with them," Millan said. "If you stop one aspect of the game, they're going bring the other aspect."
Jones was 8-of-10 for 217 yards and four touchdowns in the first half as the Redskins led 35-14 at the intermission.
Martin Del Campo broke an off-tackle play for a 72-yard touchdown on Delano's first offensive play to tie it after Dilihhunt capped off Tulare Union's first possession by snagging a pass from Jones in the back corner of the end zone.
The Redskins answered as Jones connected with a wide open Anthony Sierra for an 82-yard score, the third consecutive play for a touchdown in the game.
Delano's Joshua Garcia cut the deficit to 21 points just before the end of the half with a 34-yard touchdown run.
