Edward “Doctor Bench” Dudley-Robey, M.D., a 181-pounder from Bakersfield, became the first person in United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) to hold records in the multi-ply, single-ply and raw divisions for the bench press all at the same time Saturday during the 2011 California State Multi-ply Bench Press Championship at Bakersfield Strength and Health
“Ply” refers to a protective garment worn by competitors during lifts, while “raw” refers to lifters wearing a T-shirt or other non-ply garment.
Dudley-Robey first set the single-ply records at the 2011 USPA Pro Bench Press contest inside the Fit Expo at the Los Angeles convention center in January. In that event he set the American and California state records for both the Open and Sub-Master divisions.
On Saturday, he opened up in the first flight by setting and upping the California state Sub-Master raw record. He then moved onto the second flight and proceeded to set & break the American and California state records for both the Open & Sub-Master divisions for the Multi-ply Division. This was the third California state championship for Dudley-Robey, who on the day set five records and won four medals.
The Central Cal Intensity 14U fast-pitch softball team won the USSSA Luck of the Irish tournament in Manteca over the weekend. CCI went 4-2 and beat Team Tabu in the championship 9-3. French Olympian Eric Millot helps to pass the torch from Bakersfield Ice Sports Center skaters Melania Delis, 5, to Katerina Ruiz, 6, both of Bakersfield, at the California State Games in San Diego recently. Delis and Ruiz competed in figure skating in San Diego at the California State Games on Saturday and Sunday March 5-6. Delis and Ruiz, coached by Hayleigh Weldin, brought home 4 gold medals and a silver qualifying them for the State Games of America. This competition is an amateur sports program of the U.S. Olympic Committee. These games will be held Aug. 4-7 in San Diego. This is a national event with 45 states competing. Sports included are figure skating, roller skating, swimming, soccer, hockey, track and field, softball, gymnastics and basketball, among others.

American Kids Sports Center's trampoline and tumbling team, American Airborne, competed in the Classic Rock Invitational at the NFL Cardinal's new stadium in Phoenix, with more than 1,700 competitors in Men's & Women's Gymnastics and Trampoline & Tumbling over the Presidents Day weekend. Zachary Andrews, 10, placed 1st in double-mini trampoline and 3rd in trampoline. Ethan Meadows, 13, placed 2nd in double-mini trampoline and 3rd in both tumbling and trampoline. Nikolaus Andrews, 13, placed 3rd in trampoline and double-mini trampoline. The team also had success recently at the Southern California 3rd Prelim competition in San Diego. Zachary Andrews won tumbling, placed 3rd in double-mini trampoline, 5th in trampoline. Nikolaus Andrews won trampoline placed 4th double-mini. Kalynn Beierle, in her first competition, won trampoline placed 4th double-mini trampoline. David Brown won trampoline, 2nd in double-mini trampoline. Tristen Hoaglen placed 2nd in double-mini trampoline, 3rd in trampoline. Lindsey Relerford won double-mini trampoline, placed 3rd in trampoline 4th in tumbling. American Airborne will be hosting the Southern California 4th Prelim April 2-3 at American Kids Sports Center's northwest location, 3622 Allen Rd. The team is coached by Matt Williams.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Bakersfield Ice Sports Center skaters Melania Delis, 5, and Katerina Ruiz, 6, competed in figure skating in San Diego at the California State Games on March 5 and 6. They are now California State Games Champions at their tested levels of ice skating. Melania and Katerina both coached by Hayleigh Weldin, brought home 4 gold medals and a silver qualifying them for the State Games of America.

The Rosedale Middle School girls varsity open basketball team experienced unprecedented success this season, going 25-0 and winning the NOR League title, along with Kern County Junior High Large School Division championship. WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Thomas Lee, a 2007 Liberty High graduate, has helped the Sonoma State baseball team to its best start in the program's history. The Division II Seawolves started 11-2 and were ranked as high as 18th in the nation by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Lee led the Seawolves pitching staff last year with a 6-4 record and an 3.79 ERA. This year he is 1-0 with an ERA of 2.86 in 23 innings pitched in his first four starts. The Seawolves placed third in the NCAA College World Series in 2008. Lee is getting the job done in the classroom as well. During the fall semester, Lee was one of eight athletes to earn summa cum laude distinction, which is a grade point average better than 3.9. Lee has accepted an invitation to play for the 2011 Conejo Oaks of the California Collegiate League.
Liberty High graduate and freshman David James is a member of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Webster, N.Y.) men's swimming & diving team. Through 10 meets, he has performed well for the Engineers. Among the highlights of his season was in a 131-110 victory over Hamilton, where he won the 500 and 1000 freestyle races. He is a three-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week honoree.
