Bakersfield Southwest Baseball tourney helps needy families for Thanksgiving

Bakersfield Southwest Baseball (BSWB) hosted a baseball tournament this past weekend at their complex at Aera Park and used a creative registration fee to help feed the needy. In addition to the normal tournament fees paid by each team, the coaches, players and parents donated frozen turkeys and/or grocery gift cards to participate in the tournament.

BSWB Tournament Director Rodd Parke said "The idea came up to help out the community, so we came up with the idea of our 'Turkey Tourney'. We had fourteen teams sign up, each bringing in several frozen turkeys or grocery gift cards, which should provide some help to many families and homeless people in the Bakersfield area."

League President Darren Billesbach said that we should all be truly thankful for what we have.

"With the turkeys and gift cards we received, we were able to give the Bakersfield Homeless Center about 35 turkeys for their dinner this Thursday. We also gave eight turkeys to the Bakersfield Rescue Mission along with $300 in grocery gift cards, and eighteen turkeys to East High School's Community Outreach Program, along with a $100 grocery gift card."

BSWB is a non-profit community group that serves approximately 1,300 kids from ages 6-18 annually with a baseball league designed to not only teach baseball skills, but to teach life values. Billesbach, stated that BSWB has adopted the "Pursuing Victory With Honor" program (part of the Character Counts Campaign), and, "this tournament, designed to help our community, is a great representation of that program and a good lesson for our players."
