Although they were only a year apart in school, Bakersfield natives Brenden Barkate and Brian Putman had never met until a twist of circumstances found them both playing wide receiver at the University of Redlands.
"We're pretty much roommates," Barkate said. "He lives in the apartment right across from me. Brian, (starting quarterback Dan Selway) and I are always together. It was pretty fun playing with Brian. It's fun because you have someone that understands when you talk about old stories from high school and stuff like that."
After graduating from Garces in 2006, Barkate fought through a slow start his freshman year with the Bulldogs and eventually worked himself into an All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection.
He finished off his senior year with 37 catches for 377 yards and three touchdowns.
Following a two-year stint at Bakersfield College, Putman went to Minnesota State before opting to return to California and play for Redlands. After a solid junior campaign, the 2005 Liberty graduate missed the following year after having back surgery.
His return this season was worth the wait. Putman had a team-high 77 catches for 1,033 yards and 12 touchdowns. The senior receiver had two TDs in his last two games, including a pair in a 30-21 loss to Cal Lutheran on Saturday that eliminated the Bulldogs (7-2) from playoff contention.
"It was a lot of fun," Putman said. "We had a great offense and I saw a lot of opportunities, so it was a good time. I had an opportunity over the summer to work with (Selway) and having great receivers such as Brenden helped take the pressure off of me."
With their respective football careers over, the two are now looking forward to starting something new to fill their sudden spare time.
Barkate is on schedule to earn a bachelor's degree in Finance Economics and is looking to turn an internship with the San Diego Chargers into a full-time position in their marketing department.
Putman, an accounting major, is a semester behind Barkate and is considering helping out with the Bulldogs football team next season.
"It's kind of weird; we were all talking about it, 'what do you do with your time?' now that football is over," Barkate said. "Your lifestyle changes. You have so much extra time on your hands to get home work done or to work. It's a weird feeling."
