With his playing time limited by a nagging hamstring injury, Brett Willis has made the most of his playing time as a wide receiver at Sacramento State this season.

The Garces High standout has just six catches, but three of them have gone for touchdowns. He had a 28-yard scoring play in Saturday's 35-20 loss to undefeated Montana.

"I've been my own worst enemy," Willis said. "I just have to prove I can stay healthy."

The injury is just another in a series of setbacks for Willis, who was a two-time all-league selection for the Rams.

Willis initially accepted a scholarship to Colorado State, but after red-shirting in 2006, he played in just two games the following season and opted to transfer closer to home. He started only one game last season, but played in all but one, making nine catches for 78 yards.

Things looked to be turning around for Willis this year. He had four catches for 52 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown in a 38-19 loss to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in Week 2 before the hamstring injury started to wreak havoc. He caught a 15-yard TD pass two weeks later, but didn't get another reception until Saturday's scoring play.

"I'm feeling better now," Willis said. "I just have to show the coaches that I can stay healthy.

Across country, Katie McWhorter has finally found a home on the volleyball court.

The former Stockdale High star, who transferred to the University of Massachusetts-Boston last year after two seasons at Cal State Bakersfield, was named the Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and for the sixth time in her two years at the North Dartmouth, Mass., campus.

For the week, McWhorter made just six errors in 81 kill attempts, averaging 5.22 kills per set in three victories this week.

The senior outside hitter had more than 19 kills in two of the three matches, sweeps of Roger Williams University, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and Plymouth State as her team took sole possession of first place in the Little East Conference.

The returning conference offensive player of the year has led the Beacons to 11 straight wins en route to a 24-4 record and she is on pace to shatter the team record for hitting percentage.
