Even after a lost season for Highland, the school's pipeline to Fresno State continues.
Scots defensive lineman John Ogelsby gave a verbal commitment this week to be a Bulldog, Highland coach Tim Hartnett said.
"We're excited about it," Hartnett said. "He's got a few hoops to jump through academically, but we think he's going to get there."
Ogelsby can sign a binding letter of intent in February. He is the second Kern County player to announce a verbal commitment to a Division I school, after Frontier punter Matt Darr gave a thumbs-up to USC.
Ogelsby made 104 total tackles and had seven sacks for 2-10 Highland this year. His verbal commitment follows Highland wide receiver Anthony Johnson's in 2008 and linebacker Patrick Su'a's last February. Both Johnson and Su'a are on the Bulldogs roster but haven't played this year.
"We'll have plenty of boys to go up there and watch," Hartnett said.
Barr wins IJGT event
Frontier junior Jordanne Barr won the 19-and-younger division at the International Junior Golf Tour event at Sycuan Resort in El Cajon last weekend.
Barr shot 73-77 in the two-day tournament and is now eligible to play in the IJGT Championships in May in Orlando. Barr led by five strokes after the first round and held on to win by five after holing out an eagle with a 7-iron on No. 5 on Sunday.
Longtime refs honored
Two Kern County football officials, Jim Lippy and Dennis Wren, celebrated their 40th year of service in the Kern County Officials Association on Nov. 13 at the KCOA end-of-year banquet.
The football officials also raised $1,010 for the KCOA Joanie Scholarship Award through a raffle for a football signed by all of the group's members. The scholarship goes to a local student-athlete entering college.
Foothill grad honored
Mallori Gibson, the 2004 Californian Volleyball Player of the Year from Foothill, was selected first-team All-Big West Conference for the second straight year.
Gibson, a senior at University of the Pacific, averaged 3.20 kills a game for the Tigers, ninth-best in the Big West. She also had a career-best 42 aces, second in the conference. The Tigers finished the regular season 17-11.
Local in youth game
Anthony Mariscal, a Bakersfield eighth-grader, was selected to play in the Football University Youth All-American Bowl on Jan. 10 in San Antonio.
The game pits the nation's top seventh- and eighth-graders and will be played a day after the U.S. Army All-American Bowl that features high school players, including Frontier punter Matt Darr.
Hager nearing milestone
When Stockdale's girls basketball team opens play Dec. 10 in the Clovis West tournament, it will be chasing more than its second straight Central Section title.
Coach Glenn Hager is two wins away from 400 career victories. A 2-2 finish at Clovis West would get him there; Stockdale plays in a Santa Barbara tournament the following week.
Hager's career record of 398-186 through five years at Kern Valley and 17 years at Stockdale includes four Central Section championships and eight trips to the section finals.
Kern connection to CLU
With help from a couple of Kern County football connections, Cal Lutheran football won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the first time in school history this season.
One of the Kingsmen's starting offensive linemen is freshman Jordan Austin, a first-team All-Area selection from Highland a year ago.
Cal Lutheran's coach, Ben McEnroe, played at Taft High and later coached at Bakersfield College.
The Kingsmen won the SCIAC with a 30-21 victory Nov. 14 against Redlands, then lost in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, 38-17, to Linfield College. CLU finished the year 8-2.
