American Cheer, the competitive cheer program of American Kids Sports Center, sent five squads last weekend to the Spirit Sport "Duel in the Desert" in Palm Springs. American Cheer Flyers took first place in Large Senior Semi Limited Coed Level 5 and qualified to Cheerleading Worlds in April at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. American Cheer Blue won the Large Junior Level 4. American Cheer Red won Mini Level 1. American Cheer White took third in Large Youth Level 2 and American Cheer Silver took fourth place in Large Senior Level 2. Coaches are Jennifer Dunn, Jessica Rupe, Michael Chow, Phillip Collin, Krista Rhodes, Ashley Pazzi.
The girls Optional gymnastics team from American Kids Sports Center had a great first meet of the season at Team OC in Costa Mesa. Results: Level 7 (age 7-11): Lea Salcido (1st on vault, 5th floor, 7th bars, 4th all-around, 35.950). Haylee McDonnell (3rd on beam, tied for 5th place vault, 6th bars, 5th all-around, 35.825). Savannah Solano (tied for 5th on Vault, 8th floor, 34.475 all-Around). For 12-13 year-olds: Hannah Chernabaeff (4th on beam, 5th vault, 5th all-around, 35.10) In 14-plus age group: Cody Jans (1st on beam, 3rd vault, 3rd bars, 3rd floor, 2nd all-around, 32.20). Level 8 (age 12): Kayla Cross (all-around 32.525),Ariana Bush (5th on bars, 34.275 all-around). The Level 7 team took third. The team is coached by Jamey Gossett, Lisa DiFrancisco and Sheri Williams.
Han's Taekwondo Academy of Bakersfield participated with honor and distinction at the 13th Annual Yushen Lai Invitational Championship Feb. 6 in Carson. The Han's athletes were coached by Masters Francis Esposo, Tony Phounsavath, and Matt Estioko and coaches David Holguin, Max Mazo, Albert Urias, Ruby Carino, Alexandria Carino, Rhoda Hernando, and John Estacio. Han's won the Best Performance Team Trophy above all California schools, and had the largest team in attendance. Pete Mendez, Taylor Russell, Haileigh Russell, Timothy Espinoza, Bryan Guinto, Bernard Guinto, Jonathan Gallegos, Charles Bonoan, Christine Bonoan, Amanda Alvarez, Kristian Phounsavath, and Mitchell Wadley won two Golds in both their forms and sparring divisions. Charles Lo, Makayla Mazo, Ethan Gallegos, John Estacio, Cristian Morillo, Christopher Crisostomo, Albert Urias, Rhoda Hernando, Justin Rodriguez, RaShall Holguin, and Patrick Matsuda won Gold in Sparring competition. Kayla Alvarez, Isaiah Ahumada, and Julian Esposo earned Silver in sparring competition. ? ?

The 21st Kern County Junior High Basketball Tournament will be March 5-6 for small schools (under 300 students) and March 12-13 for large schools. Rugby
A pair of tries from Travis Johnson helped Kern County edge the rival San Luis Obispo Grogs 19-15 in men's rugby action on Saturday at Emerald Cove Park.
San Luis Obispo held a 10-5 advantage at the half, before the Tuskers regained a 12-10 lead on Johnson's second try at the 41-minute mark.
Kern Wood Award recipient Jeremy Ramirez put the game on ice, adding a try at the 70-minute mark, extending the margin 19-10.
The Grogs (0-4) sored their second try of the contest with seven minutes left.
Kern County (2-2) took the lead just thirty-seconds into the match on Johnson's first try of the contest, and fifth of the year.
The Man of the Match Award went to Mark Eberhard. Kern County's next match will be Feb. 20 at Pasadena.
