BMX
Metro BMX is the local youth bicycle track in Bakersfield. This year will mark its 20th year in operation.
Kids as young as 3 and adults in their 50s and 60s participate in bicycle motocross (BMX). Racers from Bakersfield have won numerous national and state titles and have competed all over the world, with hopes of one day becoming the next Olympic Champion.
Metro BMX has hosted nine national events and will host its 10th April 30-May 2. These national events attract over 1,000 racers and nearly 5,000 spectators.
Races take place every Monday and Friday, with practice on Wednesday. The track is located at the back of the Sam Lynn Ball Park complex, 3805 Chester Avenue. For more information go to www.metrobmx.com. You can also follow the Friday night race results on mybakersfieldsports.com.
Berrien Springs, Mich. -- The Cardinal Classic featured 26 teams from across the country, but it was the lone team from the West Coast that was left standing when the final buzzer sounded. Bakersfield Adventist Academy --a Seventh-day Adventist high school located in East Bakersfield -- received a last minute invite to the annual high school basketball tournament located in Southern Michigan. Despite being one of the smallest schools participating -- BAA boasts less than 60 total students -- the Eagles defeated Mount Vernon Academy 48-41 to cap a perfect 5-0 tournament run.
The victory marked the end of a season that saw the Eagles go 21-2. BAA also ran the table at a tournament hosted by Pacific Union College, located in the Napa Valley.
"This season was obviously special because it was my son's senior year," said coach Kevin Wooldridge, whose son, Tyler, was MVP of both tournaments. "But beyond that, this team accomplished so much more than I thought possible. It was truly an honor to coach them."
