A potential game-tying shot by Bakersfield Christian ricocheted off the crossbar in the final moments of play and second-seeded San Luis Obispo-Mission Prep held on for a 1-0 victory in the CIF Division V girls soccer finals on Friday at BCHS.
The Lady Eagles (23-4-2) were seeded No. 1 and looking to settle a regular-season loss earlier this year to defending Division V champion Mission Prep (19-4-3) when they took the field in front the home crowd of over 400.
Mission Prep scored the lone goal seven minutes into the game as Hannah Palmer's free kick found its way to the back of the net just inches over the outstretched arm of BCHS goaltender Breann Goodmon.
Bakersfield Christian had its share of opportunities to even the score on several out-numbered attacks against a stingy Mission Prep defense.
The best chance came in the last minute of play on a corner kick headed by senior Stacey Ameye that skipped off the crossbar.
"When we missed that last goal, hitting the crossbar that was the game," BCHS coach Derik Watson said.
This was Mission Prep's third straight appearance in the CIF-Central Section Division V title game and their second straight title.
"The girls worked hard out there," Watson said.
"We had our chances but they put the ball in the net. We have a young team, we are getting better, we are going to get tougher and we will be back here next year."
