Nov. 13 high school football roundup: Wasco earns share of first league title since 1961

WASCO -- Jacob Salinas rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries to lead Wasco High to a 27-0 victory over Shafter, clinching a share of the South Sequoia League championship -- Wasco's first league title since 1961.

Wasco's Quentin Cheatham carried the ball 8 times for 38 yards before leaving the game with an unspecified injury.

The stingy Tiger defense held Shafter in check throughout the game, allowing Shafter just 152 yards from scrimmage.

The Wasco rushing attack totaled 345 yards on 45 carries, sith seven players carrying.

Taft 54, Bak. Christian 15

Cody Shirrreffs rushed for 118 yards and two TDs and he also retrned an interception 65 yards for a TD, and Brice Royal ran for 165 yards and three TDs to help the Wildcats (8-2, 4-1 SSL) clinch a share of the SSL championship with Wasco and Tehachapi.

Delano 21, Chavez 6

DELANO -- Josh Garcia ran for a team-high 51 yards, including a 9-yard TD run, and completed two TD passes as the Tigers won the East Yosemite League game.

Garcia's 9-yard TD run in the second quarter erased a 6-0 deficit.

Garcia completed a short pass to Andy Martin Del Campo, who turned it into an 87-yard TD play in the second quarter, and Garcia also completed a 26-yard TD pass to Victor Anaya in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers improved to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the EYL. Chavez dropped to 5-6, 4-2.

Ronald Keas gave Chavez a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a 2-yard TD run that capped a 70-yard drive.

Chavez's Peter Markham ran 14 times for 144 yards.

Independence 31, Mira Monte 14

At Foothill , Tyler Schilhabel passed for 223 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 87 yards and a score as the Falcons handed the Lions their first South Central Sequoia League loss, forging a tie for the league title.

Independence (6-4, 5-1) also avenged a 28-27 loss to Mira Monte on Oct. 23.

Chris Miller had 121 combined rushing and receiving yards and two TDs for the Falcons, who built a 17-6 halftime lead.

Timmy Harris rushed 174 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries for the Lions (5-5, 5-1). Harris scored on a 55-yard run. Anthony Rios ran for 82 yards for Mira Monte.

Tehachapi 34, Arvin 7

ARVIN - The Warriors utilized a steady ground control offense to register 336 total yards to seal the South Sequoia League victory and a sharee of the SSL title with Wasco and Taft

Jesse Olofson and Max Clark had 117 and 105 yards, respectively, on the ground for Tehachapi (8-2, 4-1 SSL), with each running back also recording a pair of TDs.

Tehachapi's Phil Rhodes ran for 73 yards, and Cory Lange had an 80-yard interception return for a TD for the Warriors.

For Arvin (2-8,1-4 SSL), Freddy Herrera had 61 yards on 17 carries, including a 29-yard fourth quarter score.

Ramon Carillo also had 88 combined yards rushing and passing for the Bears, while Matthew Williams led all receivers with six catches for 42 yards.

Tulare-Mission Oak 20, Kennedy 0

DELANO -- Oscar Banuelos rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns as the Hawks beat the Thunderbirds (0-10, 0-6 South Central Sequoia League) for the second time this season. Anthony Hill led the Thunderbirds with 36 rushing yards.
